AN OVERVIEW OF THE TAX SYSTEM IN KAZAKHSTAN RELEVANT FOR INTERNATIONAL INVESTORS

9 JULY 2026

On 9 July 2026, Victor Kalgin, Managing Partner at Global Aim, spoke at the British-Kazakh Society Law Group webinar “An Overview of the Tax System in Kazakhstan Relevant for International Investors”.

During his speech, he provided an overview of Kazakhstan’s tax system and highlighted recent tax developments and court practice relevant to international investors. Victor discussed the key tax changes taking effect in 2026, including developments in corporate income tax, VAT and personal income tax. He also reviewed the withholding tax rules applicable to cross-border payments of dividends, interest, royalties, service fees and capital gains.

The practical part of the speech focused on three Kazakhstan tax cases. Victor examined the concept of beneficial ownership and access to tax treaty benefits, the taxation of payments to a foreign company operating through a branch in Kazakhstan, and the tax consequences of an M&A transaction involving a company connected with a Kazakhstan subsoil user.

The speech highlighted the importance of reviewing international structures, confirming eligibility for tax treaty benefits, analysing the attribution of income to permanent establishments and considering Kazakhstan tax exposure when planning investments, cross-border payments and M&A transactions.

The webinar also included contributions from other speakers on Kazakhstan’s tax framework, available incentives, recent developments and common challenges faced by international companies operating in the country.
